27.04.2011 / İstanbul

The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) President, M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, in his speech at the “Automotive Sector’s Future” conference held by the Authorized Automotive Dealers Association (OYDER) stated that the costs of taxation and input for the automotive sector should be brought to a similar level as found in the European Union countries, registration for the second-hand motorized vehicle trade to be brought into effect and for the motorized vehicles tax to be reformed as the environmental pollution tax.

Touching on the importance the automotive sector has come to hold in Turkey’s economy, he went on to say that the automotive sector has proven itself time and again in the fields of employment, production and export, making it the top exporter in Turkey’s export sectors.

Hisarcıklıoğlu emphasized the importance of the automotive sector’s success in international competition through the hard work of 15 key industrialist, 1200 ancillary industrialist, 1300 authorized dealers and nearly 25000 second-hand dealers who have defined the sector to be the vitalizing force behind the economy’s top exporter.

Speaking of the taxation on the automotive sector, Hisarcıklıoğlu went on to say that every part of the sector is so heavily taxed that politicians and bureaucrats need to protect and nurture it instead of stifling it so as to let the sector benefit the economy further.

Turkey’s automotive sector has become one of the major centers for automotive production as the number one producer of buses, second in production of light commercial vehicles and seventh largest producer of trucks in Europe.

In order to remain competitive Turkey needs to become a main production base of automotive vehicles like China and South Korea and in due time, produce its own brands in this sector as The United States, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Britain have become synonymous with the brands of automobiles they produce.

To further aid in achieving this goal the Automotive Sector Strategy Briefing and Plan of Action is an important step. Hisarcıklıoğlu called to mind TOBB’s role as intermediary between the Automotive Industry Board, Automotive Trade Board, Automotive Ancillary Industry Board and the public and political agencies concerned.

In closing M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated, “As a new generation of vehicles is redefining the automotive sector, we must be ready to take advantage of opportunities that arise and in doing so, fulfill our potential to become a leader of the sector in this region. Turkey’s automotive sector is ready to become a brand name as the necessary infrastructure for the sector is implemented; laws and legislations are brought up to date and rate of investments increase.”
