The President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Chambers of Turkey (TOBB), M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that although Turkey is the 7th largest country in terms of arable land, it still imports hay, “If we are the 7th in the world we should deserve it.”

Attending the foundation laying ceremony for the Livestock Exchange for the Afyonkarahisar Trade Exchange were TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, Afyonkarahisar Governor İrfan Balkanlıoğlu, Municipality Director Burhanettin Çoban, TOBB Board Vice President Faik Yavuz, TOBB Board Members Çetin Osman Budak, Mustafa Yardımcı, Harun Karacan and the local chamber/exchange presidents.

In his speech at the ceremony, TOBB President Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that brokering brings producers, traders, industrialists and consumers together and is an enterprise to protect their interests.

Stating that Turkey draws closer to the best exchange services in the world each day, Hisarcıklıoğlu went on, “Four of the ten products which increased the most in price in the last year were livestock and agricultural goods. Stockbreeding and agriculture used to be only done for subsistence whereas now, they are done for significant profit. What other kind of good brings profit with its meat, milk, leather and manure?

First of all, there must be grass for stockbreeding. There can’t be meat without grass. Turkey, for the first time in the history of the Republic, imported hay and grass this year. Allah has graced us with such fertile lands. How can there be competition without grass for stockbreeding?

We must render these fertile lands suitable for stockbreeding. The Netherlands, which is equivalent in size to Konya, exports 60 billion Dollars’ worth of agricultural goods and livestock. In terms of arable land, we are the 7th largest country in the world but we import hay. If we are the 7th in the world we should qualify for it. The responsibility for this falls to all of us, everyone from the politician to the farmers, to the traders.”

Following President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu’s speech, the Afyonkarahisar Governor İrfan Balkanlıoğlu, Afyonkarahisar Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Hüsnü Serteser, Afyonkarahisar Trade Exchange President Mehmet Mühsürler also gave speeches reiterating the importance of the occasion.

Afterwards, TOBB President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, Governor İrfan Balkanlıoğlu and Afyonkarahisar Municipality Director Burhanettin Çoban laid the foundation of the construction.
