Evrim Aras: Women must protect their own power

07.03.2017 / İstanbul

In a statement for World Working Women's Day, TOBB Women Entrepreneurs Board Chair Evrim Aras stated, “For societies to achieve a better level, women need to have their own power. For this, awareness is important. For a more powerful Turkey, men and women need to complement each other and move forward with mutual respect.”

Evrim Aras went on, “It is now accepted that women are more active in business life and have very significant impact on the level of development of a country. As TOBB Women Entrepreneurs’ Council, we are continuing our efforts in order to improve the quality and quantity of women’s entrepreneurial potential in our country.”

- Women earn 20.1% less than their male colleagues for the same job

According to latest TURKSTAT unemployment figures, Evrim Aras reminded that one out of every three young women is both uneducated and unemployed; emphasizing the importance of equality of opportunity in business life so that women can be stronger.

“We know that especially in the last 5 years the number of businesswomen have increased. However, it is of utmost importance to increase both the living standards and the opportunities / benefits that are offered in order to increase motivation for work. According to the latest OECD data, women in Turkey are engaged in housework for 6 hours a day. Children, cleaning, dish washing, lunch time; our women are unfortunately in the first place compared to other countries in regards to time spent on house chores. For working women, another injustice is striking. Again according to OECD's research, Turkey is in the first place in terms of gender wage inequality and women earn 20.1% less than their male counterparts. In order to increase these rates in favor of women, we all need to do what is necessary. As TOBB Women Entrepreneurs Council, we are ready to take all necessary steps. We expect the same support from the business community and non-governmental organizations.”
