Mete: “Turkish and Greek business communities are in cooperation”

Speaking at the Turkey-Greece friendship gala dinner hosted by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and İzmir Chamber of Commerce attended by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, TOBB Board Vice President Halim Mete provided information regarding the state of trade relations and potential between the two countries.​

Halim Mete, stating that they’ve covered a lot of ground as the Turkish and Greek chambers of commerce and industry, said, “We’ve taken solid steps. We are working together at the highest business community representation in Europe, EUROCHAMBRES. We are working together in the Balkan Chambers Union. We also jointly take part in regional problem resolutions such as the Nicosia Economic Forum. We’ve convened on the island, in İstanbul and in Athens. This month, we will reconvene at the island. We are working on tangible projects. Our Prime Ministers’ and politicians’ cooperation inspire us.”

Stating that Turkey and Greece face significant shared issues, TOBB Board Vice President Mete said that both countries are suffering from the effects of the Syrian refugee crisis.

Explaining that expecting Turkey or Greece to shoulder this burden is unfair and unsustainable, Halim Mete said, “All EU members must contribute to bringing a sustainable resolution to this situation.”

Stating that Turkey greatly appreciates Greece’s support and contributions to its EU membership process, Mete said that Greece’s constructive role in Turkey’s integration with the EU will benefit everyone.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said, “Holding this meeting in İzmir is a message of peace. Holding this meeting in İzmir shows that the bond between Atatürk and Venizelos holds true in the 21st century.”

Stating that İzmir is a city wherein the Turkish-Greek friendship is strengthened, Davutoğlu said that they’ve met with PM Tsipras.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, in regards to their meeting in İzmir, said, “Turkish and Greek Prime Ministers have met in İzmir to discuss issues which go beyond their countries, Europe and even the world. I am convinced that the Aegean’s beautiful smell will provide the necessary inspiration.

Tsipras reported that, along with his Turkish counterpart PM Davutoğlu, have been in fruitful meetings, discussing many issues and seeking joint solutions to problems.
