Hisarcıklıoğlu's reaction to European Parliament decision

06.07.2017 / Ankara

TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that the decision to suspend accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU in the Turkey Report, which was announced today in the General Assembly of the European Parliament, has saddened the Turkish business community and went on to say that this decision would benefit neither Turkey not the EU.

Hisarcıklıoğlu stated in his statement on the subject:

“The Turkey Report adopted today in the General Assembly of the European Parliament, unfortunately, includes the suspension of accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU.

This erroneous and unjustified decision has saddened our country and business community. It is impossible to understand the parliament, which is the center of the dialogue and negotiation, calling an end to dialogue and negotiation.

It must be known to decision makers that this decision will have no benefit for Turkey nor the EU. This decision is will benefit only the enemies of Turkey and those who would halt Turkey’s development.

It is contrary to the road map that was created after the meeting of President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Brussels on May 25th with the President of the Council of Europe and the Head of the European Commission.

However, Turkey-EU relations are deep-rooted; based on solid foundations. We, the business community, believe that efforts to develop Turkey-EU relations should be pursued.”
