A great opportunity for the 4.000 companies run by Turkish citizen in Austria was seized. The way was opened for entrepreneurs in Austria irrespective of Austrian or Turkish citizenship to vote and also candidate for elections of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This kind of right is the first of its kind in Europe.

TOBB President M.Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu and President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber Christoph  Leitl have signed a joint declaration in Brussels while attending the Eurochambres Presidency Meeting. The declaration gives way to new rights for Turkish entrepreneurs operating in Austria to vote in chamber elections and also being a candidate.

Around 4.000 companies are currently run by Turkish citizens with a turn-over of 300 million Euro and by employing 20.000 people. Those companies are mainly concentrated in the food and retail sector.

This initiative aims to eliminate legislative barriers. About the declaration TOBB President Hisarcıklıoğlu stated:” Given Turkey’s EU-accession process and the position of Austria, our signed declaration highlights the importance of integration of the business world. The declaration supports for the first time in Europe the rights of entrepreneurs of Turkish citizenship to vote and be nominated for chamber-elections”.
Mr. Hisarcıklıoğlu works as Deputy President together with Christoph Leitl in the management of Eurochambres.
During his Brussels-visit Mr. Hisarcıklıoğlu also met with Stefan Füle, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy.
