Speaking at the “Conference on the Effects of the New Turkish Trade Law on Tax Payers,” TOBB President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that the lack of interest seen last year in April to these informative meetings has all but disappeared since word of prison sentence in the new law has been found out.

Hisarcıklıoğlu, touching on the removal of the prison sentence in the Checks Law, said, “But when you observe this, there is a prison sentence. This is not what we had been told. If the prison sentence is not being removed; if there is to be financial punishment for financial crimes then the sanctions here should also be financial.”

Stating that they are the foremost supporter of the new Trade Law, Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that regulation is no longer possible with old style laws and that they are putting forth great effort to implement new laws.

Likening the new law to a suit, Hisarcıklıoğlu stated that the fabric is good, the tailor talented and the style is handsome but there are a couple of adjustments necessary and went on, “If this law was made for Turkey then Turkey’s conditions must also be taken into account. There is but a short time until the new law goes into effect. Our time is limited. If there are to be adjustment to be made to the new law, those in the field must state their opinions soon. As TOBB, we think we are doing our share to this end. Although we have some reservations it will facilitate the way we do business greatly.”

- Customs and Commerce Minister Yazıcı

The Minister of Customs and Commerce, Hayati Yazıcı, stated that it is evident that the present legislature fails to meet the needs and changing economic conditions, which is where the new Turkish Trade Law comes in.

Stating that the new bill has been the result of 11 years of systematic and intensive work, Yazıcı said that there must be patience and determination in regards to the changes made to the law.

Yazıcı stated that it is only expected that there are sanctions to enforce the changes to trade life dictated by the new rules and that the main point of contention to the new law is that it may be evident that the wording and the spirit of it do not match.

Minister Yazıcı emphasized that the aim of the new law is not to punish establishments and companies but to ensure a business environment built on the principle of win-win for all participants of trade life.

- Sanlı: If it disturbs the business world, it disturbs us

TÜRMOB President Nail Sanlı stated that the new Turkish Trade Law is inevitable in view of technological advances and Turkey’s economic goals and that Turkey will reach EU norms with the new law.

Stating that a major problem in Turkey is the inability of companies to become institutionalized, Sanlı said, “There are only a very few companies that reach the second or third generation in Turkey. The companies that hit their centennials are either Turkish delight or sweets producers. With the new law, our companies will achieve better institutionalization. Having no reservations against the new law, we still will be disturbed if the business world is disturbed. We are inseparable from them.”
