Malatya apricot receives EU Geographical Marker Certificate

TOBB Board Member Treasurer Faik Yavuz attended the presentation ceremony of the EU Geographical Marker Certificate of Malatya apricot.​

The application made by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malatya in 2014 has reached completion and the Malatya Apricot has been registered as a geographically marked product by the EU. Certificate indicating that Malatya Apricot is registered a geographical mark was received at the Malatya Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the attendances of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Faruk Celik, TOBB Vice President Faik Yavuz, Malatya Governor Ali Kaban, TPE President Prof.Dr. Habip Asan, EU Commission member for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan.

Food, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Faruk Celik said, “Turkey owns 3 of the 1,401 food and agricultural products registered as geographical markers in the EU. These are Antep Grapes, Aydin Figs and Malatya Apricots. Not only in Turkey but also in Europe, when you say figs, Aydın will come to mind; Gaziantep for baklava, and Malatya for apricot.”

Malatya Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Hasan Hüseyin Erkoç emphasized that apricot has an place in the economy of the city and is a balancing element in income distribution for Malatya and Turkey.
