Energy Council convened

The Meeting of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) Energy Council was chaired by Council President Zeki Konukoğlu. At the meeting, the current situation of the sector was evaluated while the working plan of the Council was created.​

The Council established the Production-Investment, Trade and Distribution subcommittees in accordance with market structure to address sectoral issues from a broad perspective and to take a proactive approach.

Cem Aşık, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Producers Association was elected Chairman of the Production-Investment Subcommittee while Burak Kuyan, chairman of the Energy Trade Association, was elected chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee, and Mustafa Özge Özden, Secretary General of the Electricity Distribution Services Association, was elected chairman of the Distribution Subcommittee. The priority issues of the workgroups were evaluated at the meeting, where Zeki Konukoğlu conveyed the expectations of the commission and the expectations regarding the working system.

Turkey Energy Council Advisor Kemal Uslu gave a presentation on the Realizations of the January-June Electricity Market in 2021. Uslu, in his presentation gave evaluations on installed power and production on a resource basis, the effect of water revenues and consequently the decrease in hydraulic power plant production on spot market prices, natural gas spot market prices and BOTAŞ's sales tariff to power generation plants. 51.7% of electricity consumption in Turkey is covered by the K1 portfolio of the retail companies in charge, Kemal Uslu stated that 24.2% of the remaining part was covered by bilateral agreements in the K2 portfolio of the retail companies in charge; 21.4% in the portfolio of wholesale companies and 3.1% by production companies, and that electricity demand increased by around 10% in the first half of the year and that the arithmetic average of the Market Clearing Price in the first six months was 328.3 TL/MWh.

Avni Çebi, Director of Strategy Development at EPİAŞ, gave information about the purpose of the YEK-G system, system processes, organized YEK-G market, which will offset carbon emissions in its presentation on YEK-G Turkey's Green Certificate and the European Green Agreement. He stated that Europe is trying to increase renewable energy power capacity under its de-carbonization policies and that it is possible to trade energy certificates. He stated that the European Union has the opportunity to certify that the producer and consumer produce from a renewable energy source with the YEK-G System, which is the “system for reporting the origin of the source.”

Councilors also received information on the effects of the Natural Gas Price Increase of June 1st, 2021 on Cogeneration facilities and the ability of hybrid plants to be built in forest areas.
