Turkey Natural Gas Council held its last meeting of the year

TOBB Turkey Natural Gas Council convened with the participation of TOBB Vice President Selçuk Ozturk in charge of the Council under the chairmanship of Council President İbrahim Akbal.​

Emphasizing the need for market liberalization, İbrahim Akbal also addressed climate change, carbon footprint reduction, de-carbonization and the change in current natural gas consumption and electricity production, which are important for the sector.

Yaşar Arslan, Vice President of the Turkey Natural Gas Council, evaluated natural gas consumption in 2020 on a segment basis and within the framework of climate values. Arslan stated that 65% of the population uses natural gas, household consumption increased by 3% compared to the first month of 2019, there was no change in industrial consumption, and there was a decrease in commercial enterprises due to Covid-19. Yaşar Aslan stated that the temperature averages were similar in the first nine months of last year and said that there was a period when LNG inflow was very high.

BOTAŞ Natural Gas Operation and Market Operations Regional Manager, Turkey Natural Gas Council Member Murat Önde made a presentation about the investment, maintenance and repair works carried out by BOTAŞ in order to function the natural gas system in a healthy and efficient way. Giving information about the current situation at the new entry points of 2020, TürkStream Land Part-1 Pipeline, Kıyıköy Main Measuring Station and TANAP Thrace Main Measuring Station, He stated that network development processes, compressor station maintenance works, control of offshore lines and works in landslide areas were completed smoothly. Murat Önde stated that a significant amount of savings and gains were achieved as a result of the efficiency and greenhouse gas emission reduction activities at BOTAŞ's compressor stations.

Bilkent Energy Policy Research Center Researcher Barış Sanlı evaluated the impact of the change in oil prices and exchange rate on natural gas prices in his presentation titled “The Structure of Final Energy Prices in Turkey and the Dynamics of its Short-Term Outlook.” Sanlı stated that natural gas is sensitive to the change in the currency and reacts faster than oil price changes, noting that there will be an increase in commodity prices in the coming period due to the United States' money on the market and that this increase will be felt in Turkey in November-February. In his presentation, Barış Sanlı also gave information about the seasonality effect, resource use and their impact on electricity and natural gas prices.

During the future energy systems, GAZBİR-GAZMER Strategy and Business Development Director Kürşat Marancı gave information about the hydrogen technology project carried out with EPDK in partnership with GABİR-GAZMER-ENERYA. Evaluating hydrogen technology investment costs, hydrogen use strategy in the natural gas sector in the world, savings provided with hydrogen technology, contribution of technology to de-carbonization and employment, Marancı emphasized the stages and needs recorded in the Turkey Natural Gas Sector Hydrogen Project.

Erdinç Özen, Advisor to the Turkey Natural Gas Council, gave information about the developments in the natural gas market regarding the developments in the world.
