Hosted by TOBB President and EUROCHAMBRES Vice President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, Customs and Commerce Minister Hayati Yazıcı met with the chamber union presidents of the member states of the European Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (EUROCHAMBRES). Speaking prior to Minister Yazıcı’s address at the dinner hosted at the TOBB Union Center, TOBB President Hisarcıklıoğlu drew attention to the EUROCHAMBRES Economy Forum which will be held in October in İstanbul, saying, “This Forum will be a veritable business summit for all attending countries, chambers and companies.”

Hisarcıklıoğlu went on: “As the business world, chamber community of Turkey, we are very fortunate. Customs and Commerce Minister Hayati Yazıcı is a true patron of the business world. He is the best guarantee of the solution to our problems and that our views and suggestions will be relayed to the government. I present my gratitude to him. The European Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (EUROCHAMBRES), parallel to the establishment of the European Economic Union, was established in 1958.  It is the representative of Commerce and Industry Chambers in Brussels. In time, it became a European organization with members from 43 countries and 2 international organizations. It is a very effective lobby tool, especially in the EU. It represents 2,000 local chambers and 20,000,000 businesses. Its member countries make up 37% of the world economy. As TOBB, we became a member of EUROCHAMBRES in 1966. We have worked together on many projects since 2001. We focused on projects to strengthen the service capacity of our Chambers and Exchanges.”

- Committee works

Stating that a committee comprised of non-EU members exists within EUROCHAMBRES, Hisarcıklıoğlu said, “This was a meeting of the said Committee. With us today is the President of EUROCHAMBRES and the Torino Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Barberis. Also, the President of the Austrian Chamber of Economy, Martha Schultz, whom I have the honor serving with as the Vice Presidents of EUROCHAMBRES. The Presidents of Albania, Serbian Chambers and Ukrainian Chambers Unions. The Vice Presidents of the Chambers of the Russian Federation and Bosnia Herzegovina. The Chamber Unions of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Montenegro and Macedonia are also being represented. The Adriatic and Ionian Forum, with Italy, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia, Greece and Albania among its members, is also with us here today.”

- Steps to be taken by leaders

Customs and Commerce Minister Hayati Yazıcı stated that the European continent has turned its back on its neighbors and went on, “It is impossible to attain peace throughout the world while the Middle East is dominated by blood and tears. Countries and international organizations which bury their heads in the sand today will be noted in history.”

Stating that progress towards solving economic problems on a global scale are tied into the decisions which will be made by leaders, Yazıcı said, “Unfortunately, at this point, many leaders are acting under political concerns, unable to show the courage to take the necessary steps. Outside of Europe, many countries have yet to show any significant success against the crisis either.”

Stating that Turkey’s economy has successfully passed a difficult test with the crisis, Yazıcı reported that, financial institutions, the real sector and public financing have proven their strength and robustness.

EUROCHAMBRES President Alessandro Barberis thanked Minister Yazıcı and Hisarcıklıoğlu for their hospitality.
