Agreement reached on waste management

15.09.2019 / Ankara

The Waste Management Applications Consultation Meeting organized at the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), plastic manufacturers, paper manufacturers, recycling and street waste collectors, reached agreement on issues regarding waste collection, waste sorting and waste import issues.

Following the meeting, chaired by TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu and Türk-İş President Ergün Atalay, the agreed-upon issues are expected to contribute to the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning's legislation on waste management.

The decisions taken in agreement with the meeting are as follows:

1. We want Zero Waste application to be expanded.

2. We want the status of street waste collectors to be determined and improvement of working environments and conditions.

3. We are against import of hazardous and toxic wastes.

4. We request that the companies importing waste be granted import authority within the scope of the capacity and expertise report given by the chambers.

5. We are against importing waste. As recycling industrialists and producers, we do not import garbage, we are against the fact that the individual events take place in the whole sector. We demand the establishment of a hotline.

6. We want to check the licenses given to recycling companies.

7. We recommend that the importer and manufacturer companies are inspected by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization during and on site.

8. In order to ensure a sustainable waste collection and sorting system, we recommend that the budget of GEKAP (Recycling Participation Share) be transferred to the fund of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization instead of the general budget. We want to support the people who make the collection process and the institutions and organizations that make the collection and decomposition process from the contributions paid by those who put the packaging on the market.

9. We are against additional taxes such as environmental fund. We are against any taxes, funds and restrictions to be imposed per ton.
